A discovery that changed the park's history

The park owes its creation in part to the 1986 discovery of the golden bamboo lemur, a species then unknown to science. This discovery led to the creation of Ranomafana National Park in 1991, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Rainforests of the Atsinanana.

Which lemur species can you see at Ranomafana?

Besides the golden bamboo lemur, the park is home to the majestic Milne-Edwards' sifaka and many other species, making Ranomafana one of Madagascar's most renowned wildlife-viewing sites.

The Malagasy chameleon, the forest's understated star

Ranomafana is also home to a wide variety of brilliantly colored chameleons, best observed on a night walk guided by a local ranger, which reveals a completely different face of the forest.

Trails for every level

Several hiking routes let you explore the park, from a two-hour family stroll to a more demanding hike leading to the most remote viewpoints. An accredited guide is required for every visit.

The thermal springs, a well-deserved break

The name "Ranomafana" means "hot water" in Malagasy, referring to the thermal springs flowing near the village. A soak there makes an ideal way to end a day of hiking in the forest.
